Каждая баллада сопровождается вступительной статьёй о её истории, а также комментариями по тексту.

В 1802 г. вышло двухтомное издание. А в следующем был напечатан уже полный трёхтомный сборник баллад (заметно расширенный и со сменой раздела для некоторых баллад).

Вплоть до пятого издания состав сборника претерпевал небольшие изменения, хотя и не такие, как после первого.
